This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
Historic waterways; six hundred miles of canoeing down the Rock Fox and Wisconsin rivers Reuben Gold Thwaites Books
I will admit I didn't make it all the way through the book. Maybe only about half way. It starts out nice, painting such a romantic picture of canoeing the rivers that I wanted to run out and jump in the water right away. But once he gets started on the river the book is essentially a blow by blow detail of *everything* he sees as he's traveling. Every flower bent by the wind, every shallow area he avoids, every bridge, and so on.I was hoping for a kind of historical narrative of the river valleys as he traveled through them but got a narrative of the physical landscape instead. Now, keep in mind this book was written in the 1880's, so that narrative might be interesting for some.

Historic waterways; six hundred miles of canoeing down the Rock Fox and Wisconsin rivers Reuben Gold Thwaites Books Reviews
I live in Wisconsin and have traveled the state on business for several years. I thought I knew every little town and hamlet along each of our major waterways. This book introduced me to more places I had not known; however, most of them are now gone. The cities they did describe have changed dramatically since the 1800's. What really had me dreaming while reading this book was the trusting fellowship between people. Maybe wanting is a better word than dreaming. A trip such as the three described in this book are unlikely to ever occur again because we simply don't trust each other today. I strongly recommend this book to not only fellow cheese heads but everyone who want to know more about how we lived back in the 1800's.
